The KAB is dedicating financial support to help grow the next generation of Kansas broadcasters. We’re funding internships at TV and radio stations across Kansas in 2022. All selected stations will receive $3,000 earmarked for any internship period in 2023. Every member station is eligible to receive KAB internship funding once each calendar year.

HOW DOES MY STATION APPLY?

Interested stations should fill out the application form linked below. The application requires stations to outline their vision and goal for the KAB-funded internship. https://members.kab.net/ap/Form/Fill/PN8deSJr  Submit spring semester internships applications by Dec. 1; summer internship applications by April 1; and fall semester internship applications by July 1.

HOW WILL STATIONS BE CHOSEN?

The selection process will be led by a committee of the KAB board of directors and will be reflective of our state’s memberships base (TV and radio, urban and rural). Stations will be awarded based on the applications that seem to best expose students to the unique job opportunities in Kansas broadcasting, with a focus on innovation, tough-to-fill or new areas of our business, and full immersion into station operations.

IF CHOSEN TO PARTICIPATE, HOW WILL STATIONS IDENTIFY THEIR INTERN?

All stations will be responsible for finding and hiring their own intern, and for using the criteria detailed in their internship application to guide their selection. The KAB can help stations with selection however necessary.

WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGING THE INTERNS?

Each intern will be the responsibility of the participating station (per the station’s existing internship program and policies). The KAB’s only involvement will be to provide the station with funding earmarked for the position. The KAB will not accept any liability for the interns as part of this program. The management of each intern, including all hiring, scheduling, discipline and termination, will be the responsibility of each participating station.

HOW WILL THE KAB PAY FOR THE INTERNSHIPS?

Each station chosen to participate will receive an KAB check in the amount of $3,000. This dollar amount supports each internship based on an estimated 240 total work hours at $12.50/hour. In other words, the funding allows for an average of 20 working hours per week for 12 total weeks. Any supplemental employer tax implications or additional hours worked by an intern will be the financial responsibility of each participating station. KAB checks will be issued only after interns are identified and confirmed to fill the open positions.

WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS IF MY STATION RECEIVES AN INTERN?

Stations that participate are expected to use the entire $3,000 for the salary of their intern. In return for funding the internship, the KAB will ask each station and intern to fill out a post-internship survey and write a short report of the experience.
