Chairman’s Message
Roger Brokke, WIBW TV Group TopekaGreetings Fellow Broadcasters!

As we welcome the arrival of spring, along with longer days and warmer temperatures, it’s time for us to spring into action within our industry. Here’s a recap of recent happenings and upcoming events:

State Leadership Conference Highlights: Our Executive Committee recently participated in a highly informative State Leadership Conference held in Washington DC, where we engaged with fellow broadcasters and policymakers. We were thoroughly briefed on the latest news and strategies concerning broadcast issues to be discussed with legislators. During our visits to the offices of our Kansas delegation, we had fruitful discussions. A key focus was expressing our gratitude for their support in keeping AM radios in cars. Additionally, we emphasized the importance of the Journalism Competition Protection Act, aimed at preventing Big Tech from exploiting our news content without fair compensation. We also highlighted the need for the FCC to refresh its rules to include vMVPD.

KAB to Customize NAB’s “You Belong Here” Campaign for Kansas: I strongly encourage each one of you to actively participate in the NAB’s “You Belong Here” campaign. This initiative is designed to promote our industry and lend support to our recruitment efforts. The campaign provides flexibility, allowing you to tailor ads to suit the specific needs of your station. The KAB is customizing the 30-second TV spot to include footage of Kansas broadcasters and will be distributed soon.

Student Broadcast and Sports Seminar: Make sure to mark your calendars for the Student Broadcast and Sports Seminar scheduled for April 23rd. This seminar offers two separate tracks, catering to both students and professionals. Don’t miss out on this excellent opportunity to enhance your skills and network with industry experts. Registration for this event closes on April 3rd, so be sure to secure your spot soon! The seminar will take place at Arrowhead, the proud home of the back-to-back World Champions!

KAB Sales Roadshow with Derron Steenbergen: We’re thrilled to announce a three-city sales roadshow featuring Derron Steenbergen. Whether you’re a novice or a seasoned seller, this event promises valuable insights and strategies to elevate your sales efforts. Join us in Kansas City, Topeka, or Wichita in May for this not-to-be-missed opportunity.

As we embrace the spirit of renewal and growth that comes with the spring season, let’s seize these opportunities to advance our industry and strengthen our communities!
