KAB Student Ambassador Program
The KAB Ambassador Program exists to increase awareness about the KAB on college campuses, enhance connections between students and Kansas broadcast stations, increase participation in the KAB Student Broadcast Awards and KAB Scholarship, and to further assist students aspiring to careers in broadcast.
Every Kansas high school and higher education institution with a journalism/broadcast program is welcome to have students apply to the program. The number of recipients selected per year is subject to change and is dependent upon the availability of funding and the number of applications received.
College KAB Ambassadors must be a current sophomore, junior or senior enrolled full-time in a broadcast program or broadcast-adjacent program at their respective university. High school KAB Ambassadors must be a junior or senior. Applicants must be an active member or leader in at least one journalism/broadcast student club or group. Students must fill out an application and provide a broadcast/journalism educator referral. The KAB will review and select ambassadors after conducting phone or Zoom interviews.
Ambassadors should be outgoing, resourceful, professional, engaged on social media with a strong digital presence, well-connected within the student body, and in good academic standing.
KAB Ambassadors will:
- Publicly represent the KAB, it’s mission, and values;
- Recruit students to attend the KAB Student and Sports Broadcast Seminar and the KAB Convention;
- Create content for KAB social media regarding KAB events, offers and updates;
- Assist with KAB workshops or events as needed;
- Build KAB brand awareness with clubs and organizations;
- Gather resumes from their peers for the KAB resume bank; and
- Recruit future KAB Ambassador applicants.
A detailed list of required actions will be provided to all KAB Ambassadors at the start of each semester.
Yes! Upon completion of all tasks for the semester, ambassadors will receive $1,000 each ($500 paid per semester). In addition to looking great on a resume, KAB Ambassadors will also receive:
- Resume distribution to Kansas stations for internship/hiring opportunities. (Be at the top of the resume pool!)
- Free attendance at the annual KAB Convention and be featured on stage as a KAB Ambassador. (Learn from the industry’s best and network!)*Please note that these guidelines are subject to change at the discretion of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters. Applicants are encouraged to contact the association directly for the most up-to-date information regarding the ambassador program.
KAB-Funded Internships for Stations
The KAB is dedicating financial support to help grow the next generation of Kansas broadcasters. We’re funding internships at TV and radio stations across Kansas. All selected stations will receive $3,000 earmarked for any internship period in 2024. Every member station is eligible to receive KAB internship funding once each calendar year.
HOW DOES MY STATION APPLY?
Interested stations should fill out the application form linked below. The application requires stations to outline their vision and goal for the KAB‐funded internship. Submit spring semester internships applications by Dec. 1; summer internship applications by April 1; and fall semester internship applications by July 1.
HOW WILL STATIONS BE CHOSEN?
The selection process will be led by a committee of the KAB board of directors and will be reflective of our state’s memberships base (TV and radio, urban and rural). Stations will be awarded based on the applications that seem to best expose students to the unique job opportunities in Kansas broadcasting, with a focus on innovation, tough‐to‐fill or new areas of our business and full immersion into station operations.
IF CHOSEN TO PARTICIPATE, HOW WILL STATIONS IDENTIFY THEIR INTERN?
All stations will be responsible for finding and hiring their own intern, and for using the criteria detailed in their internship application to guide their selection. The KAB can help stations with selection however necessary.
WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR MANAGING THE INTERNS?
Each intern will be the responsibility of the participating station (per the station’s existing internship program and policies). The KAB’s only involvement will be to provide the station with funding earmarked for the position. The KAB will not accept any liability for the interns as part of this program. The management of each intern, including all hiring, scheduling, discipline and termination, will be the responsibility of each participating station.
HOW WILL THE KAB PAY FOR THE INTERNSHIPS?
Each station chosen to participate will receive a KAB check in the amount of $3,000. This dollar amount supports each internship based on an estimated 240 total work hours at $12.50/hour. In other words, the funding allows for an average of 20 working hours per week for 12 total weeks. Any supplemental employer tax implications or additional hours worked by an intern will be the financial responsibility of each participating station. KAB checks will be issued only after interns are identified and confirmed to fill the open positions.
WHAT ARE THE EXPECTATIONS IF MY STATION RECEIVES AN INTERN?
Stations that participate are expected to use the entire $3,000 for the salary of their intern. In return for funding the internship, the KAB will ask each station and intern to fill out a post‐internship survey and write a short report of the experience.
