ABOUT

History

KAB was founded in 1951 as the Kansas Association of Radio Broadcasters (KARB). In 1970, television broadcasters were welcomed into the association, and in 1971 the organization dropped “Radio” from its name, becoming the Kansas Association of Broadcasters.

Mission

The mission of the Kansas Association of Broadcasters is to provide professional lobbying and governmental representation, efficient communication and effective recruiting, education and training for Kansas broadcasters, and to promote free over-the-air broadcasting for the purpose of enhancing the success of Kansas broadcasters and helping them better serve the people of Kansas.

Member Services

Advocacy

The KAB is the only lobbying effort dedicated to protecting and furthering broacast in the state of Kansas. The KAB is equally dedicated to advancing the interests of our members within the federal government. The KAB recognizes the importance of educating Congress, the FCC, and other stakeholders on how legislation and regulations affect broadcasters and their audiences.

Seminars and Convention

From providing topical training to hosting seminars, conventions, and webinars, the KAB offers a variety of programs and services to ensure our members are able to further their professional knowledge. The KAB also strives to educate the public about the critical services broadcasters provide.

Sales Training

KAB is committed to paying for sales training for our members. Through P1 Learning and the Ten Minute Trainer Network, members have access to dozens of on-demand videos. The KAB also offers pop-up sales seminars throughout the year, as well as one-on-one coaching through the P1 Plus training program.

KAB Action plan for Helping Members Comply with EEO Rules

KAB has an action plan to assist members in meeting their EEO obligations under the FCC rules, from an EEO recruitment resource list, to a scholarship program to which member stations may contribute and promote on-air.

Alternative FCC Inspections

KAB sponsors an Alternative Inspection Program to assist member stations in complying with FCC requirements. The program provides an FCC-like inspection by a KAB inspector who has been trained by the FCC field office. If the station is found to be “in compliance” that information is passed on to the FCC in Kansas City and the station will receive a three-year grace period during which it will be exempt from FCC “routine” inspections.

Broadcast Awards Program

KAB sponsors an annual awards program for students and for station members. Other KAB broadcast awards for individuals include the Distinguished Service Award, Kansas Broadcasting Hall of Fame, Hod Humiston Award for Sports Broadcasting, Sonny Slater Award for Community Service, and Mike Oatman Award for Sales Excellence.

Legal Hotline

The hotline is available to member stations free of charge. It provides access to attorneys in Kansas and D.C when legal questions arise.

Internship Reimbursement Program

A limited number of paid internship reimbursements are available per fiscal year. An intern must work at least 80 hours at a station over the course of the internship to qualify.

Job Bank Online

The KAB’s web site – www.kab.net – includes an employment clearing house to put job seekers in touch with stations that have job openings. Job seekers may post at no charge, their resumes and KAB member stations may post at no charge, their openings and have access to job seekers’ resumes.

A marketing strategy exclusively for state agencies and nonprofits

Each year, stations donate a bank of airtime to the KAB,
which provides valued services to broadcasters throughout
the state. KAB then makes this airtime available at a
discounted rate to government agencies and nonprofits –
organizations that are not already commercial advertisers –
for the purpose of distributing public awareness campaigns
important to Kansans.

Don't wait, book Your PEP campaign now

PEP can only accommodate a limited number of participants each year. We are always in discussions with present PEP
