Greetings broadcast friends,

Baseball is back! Spring has sprung! What a busy, yet exciting time of year! Opportunities are everywhere!

The KAB invites you to attend the Student Broadcast and Sports Seminar on Tuesday, May 2nd at Kauffman Stadium! This new larger event combines to maintain features from both the Student and Sports Seminars into one exciting day for professionals sports broadcasters as well as college and high school broadcast students!  Mitch Holthus is the keynote speaker with several other terrific guests and speakers as well as the student awards over lunch and three breakout sessions before enjoying a Royals game that night.  Get your team signed up today!

Broadcast scholarship deadlines are approaching in the next couple weeks. It is incredible that the KAB/Foundation is able to contribute nearly $40,000 annually to the future of our industry with the KAB student scholarships to further college education of broadcasting students in state as well as the KAB Kids scholarships for high school grads of Kansas Broadcasters. I hope you share with your staff and encourage any college broadcast students to apply.

I feel like another opportunity and KAB member benefit that is overlooked is the KAB Hotline Attorney you have access to.  In fact, I was reminded just this past week when I received an order for a political “franking” ad and needed to confirm proper procedures with accepting these and other information or posting requirements. When submitting these general legal questions, you just need to go through the KAB office, instead of directly communicating to our contracted state and federal attorneys to take advantage of this free service.

Although I left Senate Bill 13 as the last piece of my monthly message, it has certainly been at the top of our mind and maintained a heavy workload. KAB continues to have regular communication with the KSHSAA as well as our 1861 lobby firm and state legislators to push for the elimination of exclusive contracts and provide more opportunities for local state broadcasters to live stream regular and post season events. If I gave you the latest info I had, it would likely be outdated by the time I send this email as I’m learning more (and mesmerized) by the daily changes and ups and downs about procedures and politics. Rest assured, KAB remains hopeful for a positive resolution to this issue and is working on it daily with more updates to come.

As I close, I wanted you to know all our KAB board members are optimistic and excited about meeting in Wichita on April 5th for a strategic planning day. Thanks to those of you that took a couple minutes to answer the survey that was sent out as KAB dives into planning and dissecting the future of our organization and more/better ways to serve and benefit Kansas Broadcasters!
